SAUDADE (fuchsia swirl)
It's a longing born on uncertain seas. The melancholy of wanting nothing more than a glimpse of your lover's smile when all around you is the wide ocean.
Back when the world was still flat and one's own farm the only paradise, Portuguese ships sailed to India, lusting for spices and riches. In their holds rode great barrels of Madeira wine. Through tropical heat, storms and pirates, the barrels rocked below on the sailor's songs. And in the barrels fermented the dreams of the grapes — dreams of the terraced vineyards of home, the warm sun on their skins, the nimble fingers of the young hands that picked them. And the sailors sang. And the ships rocked. And the grapes that had become wine became more than wine. Lend them your tongue and they'll sing you a song of saudade. |

SERENISSIMA (chartreuse swirl)
You sit on the edge of the lagoon as water splashes over the steps of the Grand Canal. It's Venice, the most serene of cities. Like the city, you look east to Byzantium, the Levant. There's no sound but the encroaching waves. Surely, all of this is sinking, you think. But not tonight.
Tonight the table has been set for you. A fantasy of riches — the sweet, yielding fig, decadent young oranges bursting on your tongue in honeyed crescents, the bittersweet burn of anesone sipped from narrow glasses. Surely, all of this is sinking. But not tonight. |
FORBIDDEN FRUIT (bronze swirl)
The apple has a very long memory. It reaches back past caramel apples on the boardwalk, past pies baked in a brick oven, past Norman orchards and barrels of heady Calvados for a castle's revelry, past wild Kazakh forests where the first trees bore fruit. Past good and evil.
Once upon a time there was a fruit of knowledge, and it was forbidden. Before then, there was no past. Nostalgia? It didn't exist. Then in one sweet-tart mouthful it was revealed — you can't go home again. But the apple carries it all. One bite will swing you back. Where will it take you? Where will you go? |
