Hazelnut & Sea Salt — The call comes at 6 a.m. Only you can hear it. You pull on your boots and bundle up quickly. You want to answer.
The field is still wet, the sky gray. A deep chill is approaching. You walk along the hedgerows, those ancient borders — a living scrim between wild forest and civilized field.
There, in the mist, you see him. His antlers spare as a tree in winter, his muzzle hidden in the tall grasses. The white stag. He raises his head to meet you.
“I’ve come,” you whisper.
You move closer, and he doesn’t flee but turns to lead you among the trees. He moves fast. And you follow, as fast as you can. You follow as you’ve always wanted to follow, just like Sir Galahad after the Grail.
And then he’s gone. You’ve lost the trail. You’re alone at the foot of a great, knarled hazelnut tree.
“Is the journey over?” you ask aloud. “Is that all?”
A rough wind blows, and the tree drops its nuts down to your feet. A gift? You bend down and run your fingers over their smooth shells, reading their answer. A hundred possibilities lay at your feet. You gather these offerings into your generous coat pockets and head home.
